This course is all about breaking free from trading time for money and building sustainable, passive income streams so you can make money while you sleep. Below, you'll find all the key takeaways from the course, giving you a written guide to everything we cover in the audio version.
Course Breakdown
This audio course is structured into four key sections:
Why Relying on Client Work Is No Longer Sustainable
How to Create Digital & Physical Products That Sell Themselves
Building a Sales Funnel to Make Money on Autopilot
Creating a Business That Works for You (Not the Other Way Around)
By the end of this course, you’ll have a clear, actionable path toward financial freedom as an artist—without the burnout. Let’s dive in!
Section 1: Why Relying on Client Work Is No Longer Sustainable
The days of making a comfortable living purely off commissions and freelance gigs are fading fast. AI has made it easier and cheaper for clients to generate their own designs, leading many to seek low-cost alternatives instead of hiring artists for full custom work.
How to Adapt
Instead of focusing solely on custom commissions, think in terms of templates and scalable products:
Food Illustrators → Sell editable menu templates.
Wedding Stationery Artists → Offer customizable invitation designs.
Character Designers → Create stock character packs for books and comics.
AI isn’t going away, but artists who adapt will thrive. Focus on highly personalized artwork that AI struggles to replicate:
Hand-painted pet portraits with custom details.
Family illustrations blending fantasy and realism.
Limited edition prints with special hand-drawn elements.
Personal Story: My Early Career Struggles & Burnout
I started my career juggling two jobs—one at Disney ESPN Wide World of Sports and another at a vinyl graphics shop, making about $1,200 a month at each.
One job was corporate, where I had to dress up, wear pantyhose, and feel like a cog in the machine. The other was laid-back but involved sweating in a garage with no AC in the Florida heat.
I was hustling hard but getting nowhere. I had a Disney name on my résumé, but I was making boring graphics for companies that didn’t care about me.
It wasn’t until I shifted my mindset and started selling products instead of time that everything changed.
Why Posting Every Day Won’t Make You More Money (And What Will)
A lot of artists believe that posting daily is the key to getting more sales, but here’s the truth:
More posts ≠ More reach (algorithms don’t work that way)
Likes ≠ Income (engagement doesn’t guarantee sales)
Burnout is real (posting daily is exhausting without a plan)
Instead of just posting more, focus on building a system that makes selling easier.
Mini Homework Assignment: List three common client requests or recurring themes in your work. How could you turn them into a scalable product?
Section 2: How to Create Digital & Physical Products That Sell Themselves
Artists don’t need to work constantly to stay relevant. Instead of chasing trends and engagement, focus on products that sell passively:
Three Ways to Make Money Without Burnout
Digital Products → Printable art, planners, guides, and templates.
Print-on-Demand Merch → T-shirts, mugs, and posters via Printful.
Educational Content → Teach what you know through workshops, courses, or paid newsletters.
Print-on-Demand vs. Digital Products: Which Is Better?
🔥 Want quick, easy sales? → Start with Print-on-Demand.
💰 Want bigger profits? → Focus on Digital Products.
🤝 Best of both worlds? → Sell both!
Example strategies:
Sell T-shirt designs via POD and matching digital stickers separately.
Make illustrated wallpapers for phones and matching physical prints.
Real-Life Success: How I Scaled Digital Products
One of my best-selling products was my Lettering Adventures workbook series, where I taught different hand-lettering styles each month. Over time, I streamlined the process, allowing me to create them faster without sacrificing quality.
Mini Homework Assignment: Brainstorm two product ideas—one you can launch in a week and another that could be a long-term passive income stream.
Section 3: Building a Sales Funnel to Make Money on Autopilot
If your entire strategy is just posting on social media and hoping for sales, you don’t have a business—you have a lottery ticket.
Here’s a better system:
Attract → Post engaging content (art, memes, BTS, stories) to pull in your ideal audience.
Educate → Share your process, struggles, and wins to build trust.
Nurture → Move people off social media and onto your email list with a freebie (e.g., an art guide or discount code).
Soft Sell → Make buying easy with digital downloads, courses, or merch.
Scale → Set up automated emails, social content, and systems that keep sales coming in 24/7.
Mistakes Artists Make That Kill Their Sales
No clear buy link or confusing checkout process.
Never talking about their products (people won’t assume they can buy!)
Only posting finished work instead of sharing the process and story.
Mini Homework Assignment: Outline your sales funnel. How are you attracting, educating, and selling to your audience?
Section 4: Creating a Business That Works for You (Not the Other Way Around)
If you feel constantly overwhelmed, you’re stuck in the creator anxiety trap. Instead of chasing trends, build a repeatable system that fits your life.
Action Plan to Work Less & Make More
Identify what people ask you for.
Create a repeatable product.
Use print-on-demand for physical items.
Automate email marketing with a welcome series.
Final Thoughts & Next Steps
This isn’t about reinventing your business—it’s about working smarter. By setting up passive income streams, a sales funnel, and automation, you’ll create a sustainable business that supports your creativity without burning out.
